UEFA Women’s Euro 2025: Who Will Be the Next European Champion?

UEFA Women's Euro 2025: Discover the teams, groups, and Portugal's path. Read the full article and stay tuned for all the action!

Who will succeed England as the new queen of European football? Will the Lionesses lift the trophy once again, or will Germany claim its ninth UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 title? Could Portugal emerge as a surprise contender?

These are just some of the questions that will only be answered when the ball starts rolling at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, taking place in Switzerland from July 2 to 27.

Who Qualified for UEFA Women’s Euro 2025?

Following a difficult qualification stage that concluded late last year, 16 national teams have earned their place in the final tournament of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

Among Europe’s elite is the Portuguese women’s national team, making its third consecutive appearance. Alongside the host nation Switzerland, the final lineup includes: England, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Norway, Sweden, France, Denmark, Iceland, Poland, Wales, Belgium, and Finland.

Portugal’s Road to UEFA Women’s Euro 2025

Portugal’s women’s team, known as the “Navegadoras”, continue to prove the evolution of women’s football in the country. Reaching their third straight European Championship wasn’t easy.

Competing in Group B3 of the UEFA Nations League alongside Malta, Northern Ireland, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Portugal kicked off their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 journey with a 3-0 win against Bosnia in Leiria, followed by a solid 2-0 away victory over Malta.

Momentum carried them through two more wins against Northern Ireland (4-0 at home and 2-1 away), before a goalless draw away in Bosnia. A final 3-1 win over Malta wrapped up their group stage and secured a place in the playoffs.

Portugal has grown comfortable with playoffs. After qualifying for the 2023 World Cup through that route, history repeated itself. They overwhelmed Azerbaijan with an 8-1 aggregate win and then faced the Czech Republic for a spot in the final 16.

After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, which saw a record home crowd of 40,189 fans at Estádio do Dragão, Portugal pulled off a historic 2-1 win in a frosty December match in Teplice, thanks to two goals by the lightning-fast Diana Silva.

Group Stage: What the Women’s Euro 2025 Draw Looks Like

Although the road to Switzerland was tough, the group stage of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 looks equally challenging for Portugal. Here's what the Women's Euro 2025 draw revealed:

Group B: Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium

While Belgium stands as a relatively equal opponent, Spain—the reigning world champion led by Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí—and two-time finalist Italy, promise fierce competition.

Other groups from the Women's Euro 2025 draw include:

Group A: Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Finland

Group C: Germany, Poland, Denmark, Sweden

Group D: France, England, Netherlands, Wales

Group D, featuring reigning European champions England, 2017 champions the Netherlands, and Euro 2022 semifinalists France, has been dubbed the “group of death.”

While Portugal dreams big, top contenders will be battling for the crown.
